A Mount Everestet oxigénpalack nélkül meghódítani szándékozó magyar hegymászókat baleset érte.

Tegnap délben az Északi Nyeregből (7000 m) tartottunk lefelé az Előretolt Alaptáborba (6400 m), amikor félúton, viszonylag könnyű terepen jégomlás történt, ami annyit jelent, hogy a felettünk lévő jégfal leszakadt. Engem is és Konyit is elsodort a jég. Engem a jég ledobott egy jégfalra, át egy peremen, és a függőleges falon lógva álltam meg, a rögzített kötélen. Nem tudtam, Konyival mi történt, ő mögöttem volt. Reméltem, hogy őt elkerülte a lavina.

Engem később felülről, kötél segítségével kiemeltek, ekkor tudtam meg, hogy Konyi eltűnt. Tegnap és ma nagy erőkkel keresték, de nem került elő a teste. Szemtanúk szerint amíg engem sodort a lavina, Konyit 15-20 méterrel mögöttem elkapta, és direktbe rázuhant a jég.

Nekem a jobb karomon van több helyen zúzódás, már itt a hegyen egy mexikói orvos rendbe tette.
Holnapután hajnalban fogok lejönni a hegyről.

Seregi Tamás az expedíció harmadik tagja is leírja  a történteket: 40 órán át keresték Konyit, de hiába.

"Dear Friends, Fans, Followers, Everybody, I could write a lot about the chronicle about the past 40 hours, but I can not. An avalanche hit my friends while they were descending from the North Col. I lost one friend, Laszlo Varkonyi. He was the grandfather of Hungarian expeditioning, with 35 years of experience from deep sea diving to extreme mountaineering. A great guy, always in a good mood, sharing everything, helping everyone out with his tremendeous experience. One of his last feats was repairing an inverter in basecamp while we were comfortably having lunch. He took the broken inverter to pieces, fixed it and even improved it by designing a make shift water cooling system. All this with whatever he could find at hand in base camp. All this just so that the whole team could have electricity. I'm very deeply schocked, we tried everything to run a rescue operation but so far nobody could find him. After over 40 hours berried in snow and ice our hopes for finding him alive are dying.
I'm sorry for all the social entrepreneurs in the world not to be able to carry their flag where it belongs but I'm sure you understand the situation. I'm hoping perhaps someone would set up a website for all kinds of expeditions (mountaineering, sailing, paragliding, etc.) that could blog and spread the word about all...  the fantastic social entrepreneurs in the world.
 

Just days ago his daughter was having her 18th birthday. We were having fun in Hotel California teasing Konyi how she would celebrate. I can't believe this has happened. Thanks to all of you for your support. I close this blog here in memory of Konyi. Namaste, Tamas"
